TEACCH is a structured teaching approach developed at the University of North Carolina to support individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) across the lifespan. It is not a single method or therapy, but a comprehensive program that focuses on adapting the environment to the individual’s needs, rather than expecting the individual to adapt to the environment.

The TEACCH model emphasizes understanding the unique learning style of individuals with autism. It uses visual structure, predictable routines, and clear organization to help individuals understand expectations, reduce anxiety, and promote independence. Key components include individualized work systems, visual schedules, clearly defined physical spaces, and structured tasks.

TEACCH supports skill development in areas such as communication, daily living, academics, and social interaction. It is highly individualized, considering each person’s strengths, challenges, interests, and developmental level. Though it was originally created for children, TEACCH is now widely used with teens and adults as well.

Family involvement is central to the TEACCH philosophy. Parents are considered key partners in the educational process and are trained to use structured teaching strategies at home.

By providing structure, clarity, and visual support, TEACCH empowers individuals with autism to function more independently and confidently in their everyday lives.
